Bare bright copper is clean, uncoated wire with no insulation or tarnish. #1 copper is clean pipe, busbar and thick wire with no solder or paint. #2 copper has solder, paint, light corrosion or fittings attached. Insulated wire and cable is priced on its copper recovery, the share of its weight that is copper. Sorting your Goolwa load by grade before you come in usually gets you a better overall price.

Stripping thick cable turns it into bare bright or #1 copper, which is worth more per kg, but thin wire is rarely worth the time, so bring it in as insulated cable. The refrigerant gas must be recovered by a licensed technician before the unit is disconnected or brought in, so never cut the refrigerant lines yourself.
