Copper is the most valuable metal most people ever bring to a scrap yard, and it is also where grading makes the biggest difference. A bucket of clean pipe and a bucket of pipe with brass fittings still attached can be worth very different amounts per kilo.
At SA Copper Scraps we sort your copper into its grades with you, weigh each one on certified scales and explain the rate for each before you are paid. Plumbers, electricians, air conditioning technicians, builders and households all sell to us, from a few kilos of offcuts to full trailer loads.
Knowing your grade before you arrive helps you sort your load and understand your payout. Not sure what you have? Bring it in and we will grade it with you.
Clean, shiny, unalloyed copper wire with no insulation, coating, solder or tarnish, usually 1.5mm or thicker. The highest-paying copper grade.
Clean copper pipe and tube, busbar, clippings and thick wire with no paint, solder or fittings. Light oxidation is fine.
Pipe with solder joints or light paint, thinner or burnt wire, and copper with fittings or residue. Still valuable, but graded below #1.
Priced on how much copper is inside. Thick power cable recovers far more copper than thin data or household cable.
Electric motors, starter motors and compressors contain copper windings and are priced as their own grades.
Air conditioning coils and radiators that combine copper tube with aluminium fins have their own rate.

Copper can be recycled repeatedly without losing its conductivity or strength, so scrap copper goes straight back into pipe, wire and components.
Making copper from scrap takes a fraction of the energy needed to mine and refine new copper from ore.
Because recycled copper is as good as new, clean grades like bare bright and #1 copper are among the best-paying scrap you can sell.
A few minutes of sorting before you load up usually moves more of your copper into a higher grade.
Tap bodies, valves and brass unions on the end of copper pipe drop the whole piece to a lower grade. Cut them off and they are paid separately as brass.
Pipe clamps, screws, lagging and tape all count as contamination. Strip what you can do safely and leave the rest to us.
Use separate bags or buckets for bright wire, clean pipe and mixed copper so each grade is weighed and paid on its own.
Stripping thin cable rarely pays for your time. Bring it as it is and we will grade it on copper recovery.
Separate copper from steel, brass, rubbish and other metals where it is safe to do so.

It depends on the grade and on the copper market on the day. Bare bright wire pays the most, then #1 copper, #2 copper and insulated cable. Our copper price guide shows this week's indicative ranges, and we confirm your exact rate at the yard after grading and weighing.
#1 copper is clean, uncoated pipe, busbar or thick wire without solder, paint or fittings. #2 copper has solder, paint, fittings or residue, or is thin or burnt wire. Cutting off fittings and removing contamination can move copper from #2 up to #1.
Usually only thick cable is worth stripping. Thin household and data cable takes a long time to strip for a small gain, so bring it insulated and we will grade it on its copper recovery.
Yes. Bring current photo ID such as a driver's licence. We record seller details for every sale.
Yes. A handful of offcuts or a single bag is fine. Copper is valuable enough that small amounts are still worth bringing in.
