Changeover Units Are Full of Copper

Every changeover leaves an old unit with copper coils, a compressor with copper windings, copper line sets and fan motors. Whole units are bought, but separating the parts usually pays more because each is graded on its own metal.

Refrigerant has to be recovered by a licensed technician before a unit comes to the yard. Technicians across the northern and western suburbs drop off degassed units, coils and compressors between jobs.

How HVAC Technicians Get a Better Price

A few minutes of stripping often adds up across a week of changeovers.

Degas first, always

Refrigerant must be recovered by a licensed technician before the unit is scrapped.

Strip the copper

Line sets and coils pulled from units are graded as copper and coil, not whole-unit rate.

Remove insulation

Foam lagging on line sets lowers the grade. Slit it off where practical.

Compressors are graded on their own; bag them separately from coils.
