Steel is the most common scrap metal and the lowest-paying per kilo, so how it is sorted matters. Thick, clean heavy steel such as beams, plate and brake discs is worth more per tonne than thin sheet, roofing and appliance panels.
Bring steel in on its own for a bulk load, or alongside copper, brass, aluminium and batteries, which carry far more value per kilo. Ring ahead for a large steel-only load so we can confirm the rate and where to tip it.

If a magnet sticks firmly, it is steel or cast iron. Keep it apart from your non-ferrous metals.
Beams, plate, columns, thick offcuts and heavy machinery parts.
Roofing, fencing, sheet offcuts, shelving and appliance panels.
Brake discs and drums, engine blocks with fluids drained, pipe and old machinery castings.
Off-cuts from builders, steel fabricators and fencing contractors.
Steel wheels, brake parts and suspension components. Alloy wheels are paid separately.
Mixed steel from shed and workshop clean-outs, sorted with you at the yard.
Steel is priced per tonne and follows the iron ore and steel markets. This is how the grades compare.
| Grade | What it looks like | Relative value |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy steel | Thick beams, plate, brake discs, machinery | Highest |
| Cast iron | Engine blocks (drained), drums, castings | High |
| Light steel | Sheet, roofing, fencing, appliance panels | Lower |
| Mixed ferrous | Steel with timber, plastic or other attachments | Lowest until sorted |
Steel is recycled in greater volume than any other material in the world.
Every tonne of scrap steel melted down means less iron ore and coal mined to make new steel.
A magnet sticks to ordinary steel, which makes it simple to pull out before the more valuable metals are graded.
Sorting heavy from light, and steel from everything else, is what lifts a steel load.
Keep thick structural steel apart from sheet and roofing so the heavy steel is paid at its own rate.
Copper, brass and aluminium hidden in a steel pile get paid at the steel rate. Use a magnet to find them.
Engines, gearboxes and machinery must be drained of oil and fuel before they come in.
