Stainless steel contains chromium and, in the common 304 and 316 grades, nickel. That nickel is what makes clean stainless worth noticeably more than ordinary steel, so it pays to keep it out of your steel pile.
We check every piece with you, separate 304 and 316 from lower grades and anything with steel or plastic attached, and weigh each grade on certified scales before you are paid. Fabricators, kitchen fitters, plumbers and households sell stainless to us every week.

Not sure if it is stainless? Bright, heavy and not rusting are good signs. Bring it in and we will check.
Kitchen and laundry sinks, commercial benches and splashbacks. Remove taps, timber and plastic first.
Bain-maries, trolleys, shelving and hoods from cafe and restaurant fit-outs.
Stainless pipe, tube and fittings from plumbing, food processing and brewing.
Sheet, plate, bar and turnings from fabricators and machine shops. Keep turnings dry.
Drained and clean stainless tanks and vessels. Call ahead for large items.
Stainless exhaust sections, boat rails and marine hardware.
Stainless prices follow the nickel market, so the exact rate is confirmed at the yard. This is how the grades compare.
| Grade | What it looks like | Relative value |
|---|---|---|
| 316 stainless | Marine, chemical and food-grade items; non-magnetic | Highest |
| 304 stainless | Most sinks, benches and kitchen equipment; non-magnetic | High |
| 400-series stainless | Magnetic stainless, some cutlery and exhaust parts | Lower |
| Stainless with attachments | Steel brackets, timber or plastic still fixed on | Lower until cleaned |
Stainless steel is fully recyclable, and new stainless is commonly made with a large share of recycled scrap.
Grades 304 and 316 contain nickel and chromium, which is why they pay more than ordinary steel.
Stainless resists corrosion for decades, and at the end of its life it goes straight back into new steel.
A magnet and a few minutes of sorting make the biggest difference.
Non-magnetic stainless is usually 304 or 316. Keep strongly magnetic pieces in a separate pile.
Remove taps, timber benchtops, plastic feet and steel brackets where it is easy and safe.
Light, dull metal is usually aluminium. Mixing the two means a slower grade at the yard.
Tanks and vessels must be empty, dry and free of chemicals before they come in.
Separate it from steel, rubbish and other metals where it is safe to do so.

Stainless sits between ordinary steel and non-ferrous metals in value. Clean 304 and 316 pay best because of their nickel content. Our stainless steel price guide shows the current indicative range, and the final rate is confirmed at the yard.
Most 304 and 316 stainless is non-magnetic or only very slightly magnetic. If a magnet sticks firmly, it is usually a lower-nickel grade or ordinary steel. Bring it in and we will check it with you.
Weight is the giveaway. Aluminium is about a third of the density of stainless, so it feels surprisingly light. Stainless is harder, brighter and heavier.
